Off the Beaten Track and Breathtaking – Bosnia and Herzegovina šŸ‡§šŸ‡¦

From hidden mountain camps to ancient fortresses and one of Europe’s most iconic bridges, Bosnia and Herzegovina is breathtaking.

When your entry into a country begins with the border control officer saying, ā€œGood luck,ā€ you know you’re in for something special. šŸ˜‚

We started by sleeping in a simple car park in Banja Luka that we were very happy to find at 8pm, before enjoying a great dinner at Atlas and spending the morning exploring the fortress and riverside.

Then came Jajce… and wow.

If the drive through valleys carved into towering limestone cliffs, with views of crystal-clear rivers, wasn’t enough, arriving at our campsite nestled high in the mountains was one of the most breathtaking moments of our trip. We woke to sweeping mountain views, cooled off in an icy freshwater stream filled with beautiful blue dragonflies, and as darkness fell, watched fireflies dance through the campsite. It felt like something out of a fairytale. Exploring Jajce’s fortress and catacombs without the crowds made it even more special. I was genuinely sad to leave Autocamp Jajce.

The drive to Mostar was incredible, with the landscape changing almost instantly from lush green mountains to a dry Mediterranean landscape.

Staying at Autocamp Old Bridge gave us front-row views of the spectacular Old Bridge and easy access to the freezing Neretva River. Stirling was brave (or crazy!) enough to tackle the famous 12-metre jump platform into the icy water—a moment we’ll never forget. We spent our day swimming beneath the bridge, wandering the beautiful old town, shopping through the cobbled streets, and finished with a wonderful traditional dinner, including our first taste of local Rakija.

Bosnia and Herzegovina wasn’t on our original ā€œmust-seeā€ list, but it ended up being one of the biggest surprises of our journey. Authentic, breathtaking, uncrowded and unforgettable.

If you’re looking to venture a little off the beaten track, don’t skip this incredible country. ā¤ļøšŸ‡§šŸ‡¦
